Older adults are facing unprecedented levels of food insecurity
Some 5.2 million older Americans (6.8%) faced food insecurity in 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, food insecurity loomed even larger. Pandemic-related increases to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was one solution that helped remedy the issue of food insecurity among older adults. Many individuals in the eight-county Buckeye Hills region found additional relief and security that came from increased funding for SNAP and other social programs. However, with the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency declaration, that safety net has been removed as benefits to our most vulnerable populations have been drastically rolled back. An older adult in the region who was already on a very fixed income may now receive as little as $23 a month for groceries to sustain themselves.

As Southeast Ohio’s Area Agency on Aging, Buckeye Hills Regional Council often receives desperate calls from individuals seeking help finding food resources. Buckeye Hills has seen a significant increase in these calls in recent months, and the avenues where we once sent these individuals (food banks and food pantries) are facing dwindling resources and the pressures of inflation. As an organization, we see a significant gap where social services end and food insecurity begins. To address this need, we are launching A Meal for Mom & Dinner for Dad to provide older adults in our region with gift cards to local grocery stores to help them become more food secure.
